Our class recently went to the Semi-Permanent Design Conference in Sydney. The speakers were great this year and I really enjoyed hearing from Andrew Denton and Kate Moross – both extremely talented individuals in their own creative fields! Following the trip we have had to submit a short paper addressing issues around commercial viability of some of the work discussed at the conference and future trends in design. The graphic work of Jacqueline Casey (1927 – 1991) is amazing! So pared back, minimalist and beautiful but gets the message across super clearly every time…something I find really awesome and inspirational!
Been looking at the joint work of Sagmeister & Walsh, NYC based design firm. The combined work of Stefan Sagmeister (graphic designer) and Jessica Walsh (multi-disciplinary designer) is pretty amazing! Not a huge fan of Stefan’s infamous flesh carving episode but it was effective in getting him noticed – check out their recent combined work – I really like the multi-disciplinary/mixed media approaches.
I’ve been mentioning the ‘mini-exhibition’ I’ve been preparing for rather regularly of recent days. Finally finished all my pieces for it, mounted them on some black foam core and nailed them to the wall. We’ll be having a ‘public viewing’ (family and friends) after our mid semester break… here’s hoping that the double-sided tape holds firm!

First ever exhibition!
Hmm… this didn’t quite work as planned but I’m posting it anyway. Had some difficulty when I tried to use Photoshop’s tweening function – it kept making my gif pulse because the tweened parts became transparent – will investigate the issue.

The following magazine article/layout, New kid on the block, is about Ivy Lea, the flora photographer who has recently been taking the world by storm with her better-than-average botanical photography—at least, that’s the back-story. The layout for this spread is based on a fashion spread from the WILD magazine—the clean, minimalist style of the design really appealing to me. I took the two photos for the spread during a recent trip to the Australian National Botanic Gardens and made up the interview as I went along.

Chapter One – Photo Series
For my photographic series assignment I went on a visit to a fantastic bookstore called Beyond Q, which is a little-known gem in the ACT, Australia. There is music, books, great food, great people and even an Eclectus Parrot! The owners, staff and patrons were very lovely, and gave me much of their time. So here are some of the original photos that I took and will be using to put together for an upcoming mini-exhibition of this term’s work.
